What is a Dyslexia Assessment?

A dyslexia assessment evaluates cognitive skills and attainment to identify a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD) and provide tailored recommendations for learning and exams.

Who Will Carry Out the Assessment?

Assessments are conducted by Helen Mardling, a qualified Specialist Teacher/Assessor holding a current APC (PATOSS), a current DBS check, and Professional Indemnity insurance.

Before the Assessment

You and your child's teacher will be asked to complete questionnaires in advance. This background information is essential for building a full understanding of your child's development, strengths, and current challenges.

⚠️ Please note: An eye test within the last 12 months is required before the assessment can take place.

On the Day

Assessments take up to 3 hours and take place in Forest Hill (SE23) or at your home if a suitable, quiet space is available. For younger children, the assessment can be split across two sessions.

Sessions include a series of short, structured, engaging activities — word-based tasks, puzzles, and literacy activities. Regular breaks are given throughout.

Please bring:

  • Water and snacks or lunch
  • Glasses, if worn
ℹ️ Parents may wait nearby or leave during the assessment, but are asked not to remain in the assessment room.

After the Assessment

A full diagnostic report is provided within 3 weeks, including:

  • Diagnosis (if appropriate)
  • Strengths and areas of difficulty
  • Impact on learning
  • Recommendations for home and school
  • Advice on exam access arrangements

A follow-up call or meeting is offered to discuss the report and next steps.

If Dyslexia Is Not Diagnosed

A diagnosis is not always the outcome. However, a full report with clear recommendations and guidance will still be provided, regardless of the result.
